School Grounds Greening
The School Grounds Greening Project brings children closer to nature by enhancing the grounds of Pittsburgh Public Schools with plantings and outdoor green spaces.
A partnership of the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, the Grable Foundation and Pittsburgh Public Schools, this project will bring low-maintenance, sustainable greenery to all Pittsburgh Public Schools. The project is providing outdoor classrooms, natural play spaces and refreshed, low-care plantings to provide shade, landscape accents and natural points of interest for the children.

The School Grounds Greening project provides:
- Site assessment, planning and landscape designs
- Low-maintenance trees, shrubs, and perennials
- Flexible green space for outdoor learning, play, and reflection
- Hands-on planting experience for students, faculty, and school community members
- Supplies and training to help school and community volunteers care for new plants.
The School Grounds Greening Project also supports existing school grounds projects such as Arbor Day and edible gardens.
